Community Corner
Hello,
This weekend I attended the Community Leadership Summit in San Jose. A frequent topic concerned rating tools, and member reputation management. We don't do either of these at CollabNet, but we have wondered if these would be useful.
Ratings allows you to tag a message in a discussion forum as being useful, or not. In addition, you might want to rate projects, downloads, or site content. The down side of this is that it can make community members feel degraded or insulted from negative ratings, and it can inflate egos of those with high ratings. Yet, sometimes communities find these systems useful. How do you feel about rating content?
As for member reputation, this was an interesting topic and not one easily implemented. Sometimes rating systems were tied into member reputations, especially where discussion forums were concerned. But often reputation emerged out of the community itself as frequent contributors gained reputations with their peers, or people who often offered advice to those who need it. Sometimes the hosting company hosting awarded those with high reputations, or assigned roles as community leaders. Thoughts about whether or not CollabNet should encourage community leaders? Feel free to email me directly. Thank you!
Also, I want to announce two new discussion forums!
- Community Corner: Where you can have two-way discussions about the forums or the web site with CollabNet community managers, and to read announcements and notices we post.
- Distributed Software Development: Where you can discuss issues about software development, tools, problems, and solutions, etc. with fellow developers.
Lastly, System Alert: On August 7, 2009 CollabNet plans to conduct quarterly maintenance. Between 7:00 PM PST to 10:00 PM PST. Contact CollabNet Support with any questions/issues about this outage.
