  • openCollabNet Technical Newsletter June '07

Welcome to the June openCollabNet Technical Newsletter. Lots of good things happened this month: we surpassed the 8,000 member mark, reached over 200,000 unique visitors and a bunch of new downloads were added to the site (more info below). But the most exciting news of the month is this:

Subversion was among the selected solutions that Forrester invited to participate in its Forrester Wave™ Report. In this evaluation, Subversion was recognized as the sole leader in the Standalone Software Configuration Management (SCM) category and strong performer in the Software Configuration and Change Management (SCCM) category. If your company does not use Subversion yet, get a copy of the report and convince your management that Subversion is right for your company. http://www.collab.net/forrester_wave_report/index.html

Here’s what Carey Schwaber, Senior Analyst at Forrester Research, writes about Subversion:

"Subversion’s strengths are scalability, administration, and geographical distribution. Subversion’s ability to scale to meet enterprise needs is well established, with single instances managing 7,500 users... Subversion is also easy to implement and administer: Subversion customer references reported initial implementation times of less than a month and administrator-to-user ratios of better than 1:1,000".

As you can imagine, at CollabNet we are extremely proud to have started the Subversion project and to still be closely associated with it.

    Best regards,
    Guido Haarmans
    Developer Relations, CollabNet

Free Connectors for HP Quality Center and IBM Rational ClearCase

Two totally new free downloads were added to openCollabNet.

The CollabNet Subversion Connector to HP Quality Center lets you version test plans from within Quality Center. You can include commit messages to keep track of changes. The connector can be used with “stand-alone” Subversion as well as with CollabNet Enterprise Edition.

If you use CollabNet Enterprise Edition and you commit changes to test plans, e-mail notifications are sent to members who have subscribed to the “Commits” mailing list of that project. Also, every test plan added to your Quality Center project is automatically added to the Subversion repository in CollabNet Enterprise Edition.

The connector is part of the CollabNet Integration Package. You can download it from openCollabNet: http://downloads.open.collab.net/cip.html.

We also posted a free connector that synchronizes Subversion with IBM Rational ClearCase and vice versa. Read more about that connector in our blog: http://blogs.open.collab.net/svn/2007/06/subversion-conn.html.

    CollabNet Subversion Update

Subversion 1.4.4 was recently released and CollabNet Subversion 1.4.4 for Red Hat Linux was posted on June 28th. Solaris and Windows will follow in the first week of July.

CollabNet Subversion is Subversion compiled, tested and certified by CollabNet. It is fully based on the open source code but comes in a CollabNet-provided installer that configures Subversion for scalability and easier supportability. Because it provides a unified Subversion environment, users of CollabNet Subversion receive a discount on CollabNet technical support contracts for Subversion. http://www.collab.net/support/svn_support.html

Updated Subversion Binaries for Mac OS X

Early June we started making the creation of Subversion binaries a community effort through the new SVNbinaries project (http://svnbinaries.open.collab.net). CollabNet seeded the project with Subversion 1.4.3 Universal binaries for MacOS X. We posted a 1.4.4 version soon after with Subversion modules for Apache 2.2.x and all the language bindings maintained by the Subversion developers (Java, Perl, Python and Ruby). Over 3000 people have already downloaded the binaries.

Some people reported a problem running the 1.4.4 binaries on Intel-based Macs. This was quickly resolved. If you downloaded the binaries before June 15th and you run Subversion on an Intel-based Mac, please download and install the updated version: http://downloads.open.collab.net/binaries.html.

CollabNet Enterprise Edition – free 15 user download – Now as VMware Image

The free 15 user download of CollabNet Enterprise Edition is now available as a VMware image. VMware images run in a VMware Player which is available for Windows and Linux. This new download makes installation of CollabNet Enterprise Edition a lot easier.

Besides CollabNet Enterprise Edition, we have a free 15-user download of CollabNet SourceForge Enterprise, the software development platform we recently acquired. This download is a VMware image as well and installs in under an hour. You can use it for up to 15 users and buy additional subscriptions if you need more licenses.

All our downloads can be accessed from http://downloads.open.collab.net/.
